"Lane Cubstead, 1963"
Oil on Wood
12" x 12"

I was on a business trip from Abilene, and traveling by car through Dallas on my way to East Texas.  I heard the startling and unbelievable news on my car radio that President Kennedy had been shot and killed in downtown Dallas.  At first I didn’t know what to do, but finally realized that my business appointments would probably be cancelled.

I also realized later on, that I had driven within just a couple of blocks of the assassination site.  Passing through to Huntsville, Texas instead, and spent the night with relatives.  Everybody stayed glued to the television sets over the next few days, including the swearing in of Lyndon Johnson as President in Air Force One at Dallas, and the elaborate and sad funeral of President Kennedy in Washington.
