When apparent there was a problem in Cuba, of all places, missiles aimed at the US, I was a rootless Paris teenager living in quest of an improved jump shot. The Crisis crept from behind. A sudden clamp around the neck. Before “duck and cover,” kindergarten pals discussed obliteration by H-bomb. A flash, nothing left. At five, such fluid nightmare truly excluded all other imagining.  We would be gone. The Missile Crisis brought all of that back.

We were too young to imagine its backstory.
